From Trauma Survivor to Soul Warrior — A Bridge Between Science and Soul

This year, I find myself in a deeper conversation—one that explores not just healing, but wholeness. Not just survival, but soul.
I was recently invited to speak with psychologist and hypnotherapist James Hands, who is including my work in his upcoming book “Trauma Survivor to Soul Warrior: Reconnect With Your True Self,” due for release in September 2025 through Manuscripts Press.
Our conversation centred around Emotional Release Bodywork, psychosomatics, and the need to treat trauma in a truly holistic way—not just through the mind, but through the body, breath, and emotional system.
James wrote:
“Bianca explained to me how defensive patterns show up in the body, and why trauma recovery must address the physical. While much of psychology is brilliant, the release has to move through the chemistry and go to that physical level—that’s where it’s anchored and reinforced, deep within the body.”
This speaks to what I’ve experienced in my own life and through my work with thousands of clients and students. Talk therapy is incredibly powerful—but sometimes the body needs more than language. It needs to feel. It needs to move. It needs to release.
I shared with James my core belief:
“The body will show you where it’s out of balance, where it’s ready to let go. Our role is to listen—not to fear the discomfort, but to meet it, just as we meet the joy and the unfolding.”
I also told him:
“Don’t be afraid of the symptom or the pain that’s coming to the surface. Be with it as equally as the pleasure, the joy, or the unraveling.”
“It could be trauma—something that says, I’ve been feeling really crap for such a long time, and now I'm validating it.”
Because there is life within our bodies that wants to move. To breathe. To rise. To be felt.
“There is life within our body that wants to be effervescent. It wants to move. It wants to actualise itself. It wants to feed and nourish us.”
“It’s more than the function of the breath, more than the flow of the circulatory system. Every part of us wants to be fully alive.”
Working in the Grey
For years, I’ve worked in a space that doesn’t quite fit into conventional categories. I’m not a psychologist. I’m not esoteric or “woo.” I’m not working under a medical model, but I’m not separate from it either.
I sit in what I call the grey area—a space that holds nuance, embodiment, and real human experience. It’s a space that bridges structure and sensitivity, science and soul.
This is where many of us find ourselves—especially those doing deep personal work or holding space for others. Maybe you've felt it too. That feeling of not quite fitting in the clinical model, but also not fully resonating with the spiritual bypassing that sometimes happens in alternative circles.
The grey is where we honour the complexity of being human.
It’s where we recognise that healing isn’t just intellectual, or physical, or energetic—it’s all of it, at once, interwoven and alive.
In this space, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many psychologists who send their clients to me—not because they can’t help, but because they understand that talk therapy sometimes needs a complement. Sometimes the body needs to speak. And sometimes what we’ve silenced mentally is still living in the tissues.
Being recognised by someone within the regulated world of psychology—someone like James Hands—is deeply affirming. It tells me that the tides are turning. That the bridge between disciplines is growing stronger.
And that maybe… this grey area isn’t a gap anymore.
Maybe it’s a path.
A New Language of Healing
For so long, healing has been divided into compartments. Mental health over here. Physical symptoms over there. Emotional distress pushed to the side—or worse, dismissed entirely. And the soul? Often left out of the conversation altogether.
But real healing doesn’t work like that. It doesn’t fit into neat boxes.
Because we don’t fit into neat boxes.
We’re not just minds with thoughts. We’re not just bodies with symptoms. We’re not just emotions, or energy, or spirit. We are all of it—living, breathing, intersecting, influencing one another all the time.
To truly heal, we need a new language.
One that speaks to the body and listens to what it’s trying to say.
One that includes our emotional experience without pathologising it.
One that understands that the mind, while brilliant, doesn’t hold all the answers—and often needs help from the breath, from movement, from stillness, from touch.
In this new language of healing, discomfort is not a failure.
It’s a signal. An invitation. A guide.
The body becomes a map—not something to “fix,” but something to explore. We begin to understand that pain might be a part of us that was never allowed to speak. That tension might be an old story that’s still trying to protect us. That release isn’t about letting go of something wrong—but about making space for something real.
This new way doesn’t reject science.
It builds on it.
It integrates it with wisdom, presence, and experience.
And it doesn’t offer a quick fix. It offers a return.
To wholeness.
To clarity.
To the deeper truth of who we are.
